Project objectives

The main goal of the project results from the need to solve the ecological problems of the border region in its entirety, i.e. not only soil, dust and gas emissions, but also another key component, which is water. The impact of hazardous contaminants occurring due to possible leaks and inflows of mine water into surface water is identical on both sides of the common border.

Only through the joint cooperation of both countries and the use of a common methodology can a higher added value of the project be achieved. By jointly solving this still insufficiently solved, but current problem, there will be further intensification, deepening and strengthening of the already existing and proven cooperation between the two institutions. She has already successfully started projects focused on the issue of landfills. The aim is therefore to enhance the existing cooperation between VŠB-TUO and GIG in a more comprehensive solution of ecological problems in the common border, including issues of air, soil and water protection. The goal of the project is thus completely in line with the objective of OP 4: Cooperation of institutions and communities and also in line with the specific objective 4.1. Its implementation will make it possible not only to jointly solve and evaluate the pressing problem of surface water contamination with comparable methods and procedures that will be uniform and acceptable to the target groups of both countries.

The benefit of the project is also, based on the unification and verification of the applied methodological procedures, a recommendation for the proposal of new measures to assess the level of surface water contamination not only of the two neighboring states, but also of other EU member countries in accordance with the EU Framework Water Directive. The results will be forwarded to the authorities responsible for the quality of the ŽP, who can then recommend amending the legislation in accordance with the project’s conclusions. The proposed project is thus a logical subsequent step with a positive impact on both border regions and their population.
